Stories about Mathletes.... Alumni News ....What's NewTwo MATHCOUNTS students also excelled in other state competition. He Li, an eighth grader from Eden Prairie Central Middle School and a member of the Central MATHCOUNTS team that took second place at the State Math Meet March 15, took top honors in the Regional Spelling Bee March 13. Li will go to Washington, D.C., in May to compete in the National Bee. He beat out Nathan Salo, Falcon Ridge Middle School, to take first in the spelling bee but Nathan won the math honors. Nathan was the second place individual winner in the MATHCOUNTS State competition and heads to Denver May 8 to compete in the National Math Finals as part of the four- member Minnesota team (see photo). In last year's Spelling Bee, Mathcounts students also did well,. Jonathan Liu, also a MATHCOUNT state competition participant and an eighth-grade student from Central Middle School in Eden Prairie, was the 2007 Twin Cities Metro Spelling Bee champion.
"We are proud to recognize our most outstanding volunteers with the 3M Community Volunteer Award," said Alex Cirillo, 3M staff vice president, Community Affairs. In addition to the $1,000 donation, and as part of the 3M Volunteer Match, 3M will donate $200 to a non-profit organization at which the awardee volunteers more than 25 hours per year. 2007 Varsity ScholarsThe four top scorers in the MATHCOUNTS State Competition were among those Minnesota students recently receiving Excellence in Science and Math Education Varsity Scholar Awards. The awards were part of Excellence in Science and Math Education Day, so proclaimed on March 31 by Governor Pawlenty who presented the awards to the students at a rally at the Science Museum. Receiving the awards were Maggie Flint, Field Middle School, Minneapolis; Denise Chen, Wayzata East Middle School, Plymouth; Chris Mueller, Eden Prairie Central Middle School; and Andrew Ford, St. Louis Park Junior High.
