Minnesota’s own Brian Malm, PE, was sworn in as NSPE president on August 8 at the NSPE Convention in Raleigh, North Carolina. Brian has been an active member of NSPE and MnSPE since 1999, and served as MnSPE President from 2017-2018.
Brian told us that as NSPE president, he is looking forward to serving the organization and continuing NSPE’s mission to foster licensed professional engineers in service to society.

“I’m proud to be a Licensed Professional Engineer and a member of NSPE, and I’m honored to be able to serve as NSPE president this year”, Brian said. “As PE’s we take our responsibility to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public very seriously. I believe a part of that responsibility includes promoting and protecting the PE license and advocating for issues that affect PE’s across the nation. We can best fulfill that responsibility by being active members of NSPE and supporting our volunteer leaders and staff across the NSPE federation. If you’re not currently active, please join us and help support your profession. If you’re not sure how to get active in NSPE, please reach out and ask how you can help. There are plenty of opportunities. If you have PE friends or colleagues who aren’t members, please invite them to join. We would love to see you.”
Brian is a principal engineer and work group leader for Bolton & Menk in their Rochester, MN office, and serves as the city engineer for several Southeastern Minnesota cities. Brian explains that what started as an early interest in designing buildings turned into a passion for working with people. Whether it be at meetings, face-to-face, on the phone, or via email, he loves the fact that he can interact with so many different people throughout his day. He takes pride in the positive impact the projects he’s been able to work on in his career have had on people who live in the communities he serves. Brian began his career in the planning, design, and construction of public works projects in 1996. He is also a bit of a history buff and enjoys reading books about the Civil War.
MnSPE President Jennifer Lowry PE made sure President Malm got some fun recognition with Malm Balm chapstick, Minnesota’s contribution to the conference swag bag. The balm is a tribute to Malm’s dedication to the society and protecting licensure. And PE Con delegates loved it!
