Downtown Minneapolis Engineering Projects Walking Tour

MnSPE invites you to join us for our fall kickoff event – a walking tour downtown Minneapolis of various engineering projects. Led by several consultants and representatives from the City of Minneapolis, this is a fun chance to learn about recent projects downtown, connect with other MnSPE members, and enjoy a fall Minnesota day. We are hoping for great weather. If there is cold or rain, we will adjust to use the skyways.

Date: Thursday, September 25

Schedule & Location:
-2 PM – Gather at Stantec office for projects overview (specific location details will be sent upon registration)
-2:30 – 4 PM – Walking tour
-4-5 PM – Social (details TBA)

PDHs: 2.0

Cost: Free for current MnSPE members. $130 for non-members. Discounts available for non-members of some sponsoring firms. Check the registration form for details.

Topics covered during this event will include:

  • Incorporation of Green Infrastructure in our Projects (Chapter 54) 
  • Bicycle Improvements 
  • Pedestrian Improvements 
  • Transit Improvements 
  • Construction Coordination (8th St, 4th St, Hennepin Ave+ Utility Coordination, Transit) 

About the walking tour/projects:

  • Our hosts, Stantec, will share about various projects they have been involved in downtown Minneapolis.
  • Allison Bell, senior professional engineer in the transportation, engineering, & design division of Minneapolis Public Works will join us to share about various green and stormwater aspects of these projects. Allison has also previously worked directly with green infrastructure with her work in Minneapolis. 
  • JoNette Kuhnau with Kimley-Horn will share about their work on Hennepin Ave.
  • Marcus Thomas with Bolton & Menk will discuss the 4th Street between 2nd Avenue North and 4th Avenue South project that improved multimodal access, safety, and stormwater quality. The project replaced deteriorated bituminous pavement with new concrete, added wider sidewalks, curb extensions, and a two-way protected bike lane to better serve pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Nick Turner with Alliant will join us to share about some of their work downtown, incuding the Baker Center, where we will gather, which houses both Stantec and Alliant offices.

Additional tour stops/projects might be added.
